Madrid Jazz Festival 2005

Jazz_festival_20052

For the past 3 to 4 weeks I have seen a number of visitors arriving to this site looking for the Madrid Jazz Festival 2005. Unfortunately, they have had to content themselves with details of last year’s event. Well, as is often the case, the powers that be in Madrid have decided to release online details of this year’s event at the very last minute.

The XXII Madrid Jazz Festival will start on November 1st, 2005 and will feature an array of artists from around the world. It will conclude on the 1st December, 2005. This year it looks like around a third of all acts will be Flamenco Jazz-related. The festival will kick off with a concert by Paquito D’Rivera – ’50 Años y 300 noches’ – at the Centro Cultural de la Villa, the primary venue for most of the festival.

This year 2 concerts will take place with musicians from New Orleans, scene of so much devastation a couple of months ago. Some of the highlights of the festival include:

  • Preservation Hall Jazz Band of New Orleans
  • Dave Holland Quintet / Javier Vercher Cuarteto
  • Charlie Haden´s Liberation Music Orchestra / Dennis Rollins
  • Joe Zawinul Project & Wdr Big Band Köln
  • Diego Amador Trío
  • Roy Haynes
  • María Schneider Jazz Orchestra
  • Iré Habana : José María Vitier Cuarteto / SedaJazz
  • Guillermo McGill Quartet & David Liebman
  • Bob Sands Big Band & Laika Fatien
  • Habana Report / Joshua Edelman

And many, many more. For a full listing of shows, events and artists, you will need to check out the Esmadrid Jazz Festival Website

It is not just the large venues that will host Jazz artists but also the popular Jazz clubs, like Café  Central, Bar Café Clamores Jazz, Sala Barco and Rincon del Arte Nuevo.

In addition, you will find Jazz films like Piano Blues by Clint Eastwood and When We Were Kings by Leon Gast. There are two masterclasses and even Jazz concerts for kids.

For a full listing of show and events, you will need to check out the Esmadrid Jazz Festival Website

Festival de Otoño

Festival

Starting on October 6th and running for a full month, Madrid will host its yearly autumn festival, the Festival de Otoño. The festival showcases dance, music and theatre companies from around the world and is held in the major Madrid theatres: the Teatro de la Zarzuela, Teatro Madrid, the Círculo de Bellas Artes and Teatro Albéniz, to name but a few. Here is a brief overview of some of the artists and performances which will feature during this month:

Music
Joan Manuel Serrat; Elza Soares; Dead Capo; La Capella Reial de Catalunya and Hespèrion XXI and Racalmuto

Theatre
Shakespeare’s A Winter’s Tale and Measure for Measure (in English); Sophocles’ Antigone (in Brazilian); Macbeth and Othello (in Lithuanian) and Stupidity and Versión Original Subtitulada (in Spanish) – all plays have subtitles in Spanish

Dance
Dance companies from Spain, UK, Belgium and France will be performing across the theatres of Madrid.

The website also has a list of venues, with accompanying prices and addresses.

Public Transport Fiesta

MadridsincochesThe City Council of Madrid along with EMT (bus) and Metro Madrid will be holding, for the third year running, a ‘public transport’ fiesta – the website is called Madrid Sin Coches (Madrid Without Cars). The idea of the fiesta is to create more awarenesss of public transport and to use personal vehicles in a more rational way in the city centre – very admirable! As part of this celebration a FREE concert will be held in the evening, featuring popular Spanish band Pereza singer Fran Perea and Cuban Rap band Orishas. The concert will be held in the Paseo de Camoens, which is a short walk from Moncloa Metro stop. In the morning there is a children’s fiesta starting at 11.30 a.m.

I would certainly recommend you go along and listen to Pereza who are undoubtedly the Spanish Rock/Pop find of the year.

Timetable
11.30 pm: Children’s fiesta
7.00 pm : Fran Perea
8.30 pm: Pereza
10.00 pm: Orishas

Flamenco in the Metro

From the 12th to the 16th September, the metro station of Nuevos Ministerios will be putting on a flamenco show every single evening at 10 p.m. Among the guests who will be taking part are: Manuela Carrasco (flamenco dancer), El Lebrijano (flamenco singer), Antonio El Pipa (flamenco dancer), Falete (flamenco signer) and Tomatito (flamenco guitarist). Entry is free to these events but it would probably be advisable to get there quite early.

La Otra Mirada del Flamenco – Flamenco Festival

TeatropradilloThe flamenco festival La Otra Mirada del Flamenco will this year celebrate its tenth anniversary at the Teatro Pradillo. It has supported comtemporary flamenco artists and projects over the decade and says itself that some of the productions have been quite risky and have broken new ground. For the tenth anniversary they have put together a line up of both young and well-known artists such as Belén Maya and Rafaela Carrasco, Angel Rojas, Manuel Liñán and Silvia Marín.

The press information actually says that La Otra Mirada del Flamenco will give international visitors to Madrid an alternative flamenco programme of great quality in a small format to the purely commercial offerings that can be found.

Ticket Prices: 12 Euros can be bought at the theatre
Address: C/ Pradillo, 12
Metro: Concha Espina (Exit Plaza Cataluña)

Madrid’s Cultural Summer Programme

Veranos2Throughout July and right up to August 14th, the Madrid City Council puts on its summer entertainment programme, called Veranos de la Villa, which sees events taking place both indoors and outdoors and cuts across the cultural spectrum. It is a wonderful opportunity to see Spanish culture at its best and the programme includes flamenco, dance, music, zarzuela, theatre and much more. Here are some examples of what’s on offer:

  • Soloists from the Royal Opera House Covent Garden will sing in the Plaza de Oriente (in front  of the Royal Palace).
  • Flamenco dance companies and singers like Compañia Manuela Carrasco, La Tana (Montse Cortés), Belén Maya, Carmen Linares and El Cigala will also play the Sabatini Gardens
  • Richard III will be performed by the Centro Drámatico Galego
  • Miguel Riós, Roberta Flack, Robert Cray and Antonio Vega will play the Patio Central de Conde Duque

This is just a small selection of what’s going on over this time. I would suggest you take a look at the  Veranos de la Villa site – it is in Spanish but you should be able to find your way around. Tip: Actividades means activities/events and Espacios, venues. Many of the events are free, though there is a small charge for indoor venues.

Pereza: Madrid’s Top Rock Band

Pereza_1Whilst in FNAC a few weeks ago I noticed a couple of Spanish lads buying a good few copies of the same CD. The band in question was called Pereza and the album – Animales – was the latest release from the band. The next time I went in to FNAC I listened to the album and was immediately hooked. I have been playing the album non-stop ever since – they are probably the most exciting Spanish rock band I’ve heard in many a year.

Pereza are a band from the North of Madrid who have been playing together since the end of the 1990’s and ‘Animales’ is now their third album. The first song they released off the album was ‘Princesas’ and you can listen to it and others on the Pereza website.

The band will be playing at the Palacio de Deportes in Madrid on the 11th June and I would certainly recommend trying to get along to see them.

Hard to think that this band formed in 1978.

Flamenco-World.com opens its first shop

Tienda3 For over 8 years Flamenco-World.com has had a web presence and has grown into on of the major flamenco web sites in the world. Now, as a result of demand from its readers/customers, it has opened its first shop in Madrid. The shop is located in Madrid’s well-known c/Huertas and has two rooms which display a variety of flamenco-related products, from CD’s and DVD’s to books, shoes, postcards, guitars, shawls, box drums and accessories. Their intention is the following:

“We want to cater to the demanding enthusiast, but also to the tourist and the curious seeking a place representative of that part of Spanish culture which is flamenco, presented enticingly and seriously, as heritage of the people and not just of sybarites”.

Walking along c/Huertas, which is one of the main centre’s of Madrid’s nightlife, a couple of weeks back I couldn’t help but see the shop front in daytime with its deep red colours – this is quite strange as the bars & restaurants of this famous nightspot tend to be invisible in daytime!
