One very interesting “barrio” is Vallecas. You won´t find it in any tourist guide, partly because it is not obviously attractive. Nevertheless it has some of the most alluring grass roots events in the whole of Madrid and a “villagey” atmosphere that you only find there. The Vallecas Carnival in February is by far the best in Madrid. You could also check out a fiesta which involves throwing as much water at people as possible. A day out with a difference would be going to a match at “Rayo Vallecano”. No, it´s not quite Real Madrid but this is made up for by the passion of the fans.
